Eating Healthy on a Budget: My Blue Apron Review

I have been using Blue Apron for over 16 months now and I love them for both their recipes and mission!

I don’t have it delivered every week, but usually 2-3 times a month.

One might think that meal delivery services are expensive and cost a premium, and maybe some are, but not Blue Apron.

I pay under $60 per week for 3 different meals.

I am single, so I get the 2-person plan (there are also family plans). Each meal has at least 2 servings.

Depending on the meal, I can sometimes stretch it to 3-4 servings, which means on average 3 recipes actually nets me around 9 servings/meals a week. That’s around $6.67/serving. I usually end up taking leftovers for work lunches.

Overall, not bad for $60/week for fresh, whole ingredients.

Here’s why I really LOVE Blue Apron

 

Creating Better Standards. At the grocery store, it can be hard to tell whether food is high quality and sustainably grown. Blue Apron partners with the foremost sustainability experts to create better standards for growing food and raising animals. This means better outcomes for our environment, guaranteed markets for farmers and higher quality ingredients for our people and families. This includes sustainable seafood recommended by Seafood Watch®, non-GMO ingredients, and animals not fed antibiotics or hormones.

 

Regenerating the Land. Regenerative agriculture—putting more back into the land than you take—is essential for the long term viability of America’s food system. By building menus around crop rotations that are best for farmers, Blue Apron helps replenish farm land soil and increase farmer yields, while reducing reliance on inputs like costly pesticides and fertilizers. They are partnered with 150 individual farmers. Blue Apron’s agroecologist and farm partnerships team develops crop plans each season with the farmers, including monitoring progress with soil tests and farm sensors to help replenish the health and productivity of their land.

 

Eliminating the Middle-Man. In the traditional supply chain, ingredients are often picked before they are ripe so they can withstand a long journey through the hands of many middlemen. Blue Apron has pioneered a different model that delivers fresher, high-quality food from the farm to the kitchen, avoiding long and wasteful detours at costly grocery stores.

 

Reducing Food Waste to Create Better Value. Almost half of all food in America is wasted, which means significant natural resources are lost in food production while consumers pay inflated, higher prices. Blue Apron’s membership-model allows them to predict orders each week, so they can work with farmers to plan and utilize whole crops, growing only what’s needed. They then send out pre-portioned ingredients to cook each recipe, so there is not extra food left over at the end of the week. These practices allow Blue Apron to reduce food waste across their supply chain, and bring you and me incredible ingredients at a better value than the grocery store.

Generous Servings Sizes. Sometimes I am amazed at what they consider a serving size, I can usually always make 3-4 servings out of one recipe, but maybe that’s just me. Most leftovers are then used for work lunches. Nothing gets thrown out. It’s all too goo not to eat. I assume this is the same for the family plans.

 

Fun and Convenient. Everything is delivered in one, fridgerated box on the day of my choosing to my doorstep. This saves me tremendous amounts of time since I don’t have to meal-plan and go grocery shopping.

 

Beautiful Recipe Cards with Pictures. These recipes are designed for beginner/novice cooks. I have never had a difficult recipe. I have also never had a bad recipe or meal. Everything has been delicious. I am not a professional chef by any means, and I have had no problem making these meals. Plus, I am learning how to cook from scratch. Most of these meals use whole ingredients with very few canned or processed ingredients. The recipe cards are also made to keep and save. Average prep and cooking time is 30-45 minutes. Overall, each meal is fun and easy to make.

Plenty of Menu Options. Blue Apron just recently changed its menu selection. You now have 8 different meals (when on the 2-person plan) to choose from each week. There’s a variety of beef, pork, chicken, fish and vegetarian options. You can choose any combination of meals now (there’s no blackout restrictions). You can see and plan each week usually up to 4 weeks in advance, and cancel a delivery in advance. It’s really easy to manage and cancel deliveries through their easy website and app.

 

Blue Apron’s Limitations

 

Blue Apron at this point doesn’t offer any specific vegan or Paleo diet options. Not a big issue for me, but for some people this may determine which meal delivery company they go with since there are companies that do offer these options.

Note: I have not tried the other meal delivery services ( and I don’t plan too since I love Blue Apron so much).
